Description
My fourth and final project for my Relief Printmaking class I took while in Tokyo.
In the class we did projects with lino and woodblock, and for our final we could do whatever we wanted with either. I chose woodblock because I like the quality of the ink and since we learned the traditional Japanese technique to printing, I figured I might as well ultilize it!
Anyway, I wanted to do a long format pair of images in the Art Nouveau style. I ended up picking "sun" and "moon" and depicted them as sort of Japanese beauties to honor my stay in Japan. Ultimately, I wanted to combine the Art Nouveau style with a Japanese and woodblock twist.
--------------------
SYMBOLS:
-The flowers I chose to depict the Sun were, of course, sun flowers (along the sides) and morning glories (on kimono).
-At the top shows the sun rising and setting...
-Another thing I wanted to depict was a classic trait among pairs in Japanese culture: one has open eyes and mouth, the other has close eyes and mouth.
--------------------
This consists of 3 plates, though I did multiple colors on some of the plates. The line plate took over 5 hours (straight, btw) to carve! The line plate also decided to warp horribly, and make it nearly impossible to make an aligned print >.<
(I will add detail shots and picture of the plates soon!)
This is a pair with the "Moon" print [link]
-------------------
~4.5 x 12" plus margin
3 plates
water-based ink
15 print series
